Parish Life
Welcome to St. Benedict Catholic Church. We hope that as
you learn more about our parish and have the opportunity to attend
Sunday liturgy with us, you will experience a warm welcome and a true
sense of community.

We have adopted
St. Benedict as our patron to reinforce
one of his teachings that “the church is a community – a community of
learners in the school of service.” This teaching is core to our parish
life and captures our mission statement
quite well.
Our parish held its first Sunday Mass on September 5th
1999. As our five-year milestone passes, we have a lot to be thankful
for and a promising future ahead.
With over 240 registered families, our parish serves Mt.
Pleasant, Awendaw, McClellanville and other areas east of the Cooper
River and offers unique resources, ministries and spiritual enrichment
opportunities for our members.
As a parish with over 100 young families, both a Nursery
and a separate Children’s Liturgy of the Word are offered during Mass.
The hospitality social after Sunday Mass has become a favorite hallmark
of our community as members and guests gather in fellowship to greet and
get to know one another. It is a valuable time for guests and new
parishioners to ask questions and experience a true sense of the parish
life.
We have a strong belief that religion is caught more
than taught. The young members who are an integral part of parish life
learn by experiencing their faith from and alongside their parents and others in the community. By actively participating in the
Family Intergenerational Religious Education
(F.I.R.E.) program, families gather in
small faith sharing groups
for prayer, Scripture study, discussion, socialization, fun and mealtimes. Likewise, sacramental preparation of the children is
done by parents and supported by the parish staff and adult mentors
chosen by each child from his/her respective F.I.R.E. group.
Looking Ahead
Our
parish is looking to expand its presence with the recent acquisition of
54-acres, located near the entrance of Darryl Creek Road, off of U.S.
Highway 17 and across from the new Wando High School.
A long-term master plan is currently underway and is
being designed by Island Architects, Inc. of Chester, Virginia. The
master plan will entail a large church structure, a substantial
multipurpose building, a K-8 Catholic school, church offices and meeting
rooms, and a number of homes for the elderly in the community that
require assisted living facilities.
